چکیده
This chapter addresses the debate concerning status of nonmanuals (head, face, body) as prosodic or not by exploring in detail how prosody is structured speech and what might be parallels differences sign. Prosody divided into two parts, rhythmic phrasing (timing, syllables, stress), intonation. To maximize accessibility, each part, an introduction to known for presented, followed and/or claimed sign languages. With exception internal structure languages are very similar spoken domain. In intonational domain, less strong, part because analogies nonmanual functions intonation tend based on older/simpler models There needs much more detailed research catch up with recent

Prosody and Syntax in Sign Languages.
Prosodic structure in sign languages is encoded by articulations of the hands, face, and body. Despite the different physical system, there are many similarities to prosody of spoken language, such as the existence of a prosodic hierarchy, alignment of intonational elements (conveyed by the face) with temporally marked prosodic constituents (conveyed by the hands), and a close relation between ...
متن کاملComparing Prosody Across Many Languages
An empirical metric is developed to measure similarity or distance between the prosodic systems of diverse languages. Two physical variables which carry prosodic information, F0 and amplitude envelope modulation, are used as inputs in a pairwise language discrimination task. A novel neural network model is trained to discriminate among pairs of languages drawn from a set of ten languages in a t...
متن کاملTranslation and Prosody in Swiss Languages
The SIWIS project aims to investigate spoken language translation, where both the speaker characteristics and prosody are translated. This means the translation carries not only spoken content, but also speaker identification, emotion and intent. We describe the background of the project, and present some initial approaches and results. These include the design and collection of a Swiss bilingu...
متن کاملLexical frequency in sign languages.
Measures of lexical frequency presuppose the existence of corpora, but true machine-readable corpora of sign languages (SLs) are only now being created. Lexical frequency ratings for SLs are needed because there has been a heavy reliance on the interpretation of results of psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic experiments in the SL research literature; yet, these experiments have been conducted ...
متن کاملNatural Sign Languages
It has been nearly forty years since serious investigation of natural sign languages began to show that these languages are bona fide linguistic systems, with structures and rules and the full range of expressive power that characterize spoken languages. Researchers have spent most of that time demonstrating, with increasing rigor and formality, the sometimes surprising similarities between lan...
